Jacquelyn Chenier
Chenier-family_webA universally accessible playground is being proposed for the village of L’Orignal in memory of Sacha Chenier. Sacha Chenier was an 11 year old boy who lived in L’Orignal. He was severely affected by cerebral palsy and required the use of a wheelchair for most of his life. He was also born blind, epileptic, and with cognitive delays. Sacha was lovingly cared for at home where he lived with his parents Jason and Jacquelyn and his older brother Sebastien. Despite his many challenges, Sacha was a happy little boy who always had a smile on his face and his infectious laughter could brighten up a room. Sacha passed away suddenly on June 9th 2014 due to epilepsy related complications.
The playground will feature equipment that is inclusive and accessible to everyone, including children with disabilities. The future play space, which is the dream of the Chenier family – Sacha’s parents and his brother Sebastien, will be one of the most inclusive playgrounds in Canada and will allow children of all abilities to play together. Sacha’s mother, Jacquelyn Chenier came in to the studio to tell us about this ambitious project and fitting memorial to her son Sacha.

Donation of used items sought for upcoming yard sale.

Champlain, ON – It’s spring cleaning time, which means you likely have a few items lying around that could find new life in someone else’s home. The fundraising committee for Sacha’s Park is looking for donations of gently used items that can be sold at an upcoming sale to help raise funds for a universally accessible playground that has been proposed for the village of L’Orignal. The playground, in memory of Sacha Chenier, will feature equipment that is inclusive and accessible to everyone, including children with disabilities. The future play space, once built, will be one of the most inclusive playgrounds in Canada and will allow children of all abilities to play together.

The Chenier family and members of the park’s fundraising committee will be set up on Court Street in the village of L’Orignal as part of a community yard sale on Saturday, May 30th, where they will be selling the donated items and talking to people about the playground project.

Jackie Chenier, Sacha’s mother, says “this a great opportunity for our community to come together and show its support for the project. We understand that not everyone can afford to make a financial contribution to the park, so donating a few things that they are no longer using is another way of helping.

If you have items to donate, please contact Jackie Chenier at 613-676-0517 or by email at [email protected] to make drop off or pickup arrangements. Used items in good condition are appreciated; however, furniture, TVs, large appliances, and mattresses cannot be accepted.

About Sacha’s Park:
A playground, to be known as Sacha’s Park, is being proposed for the new Place La Seigneurie development in L’Orignal. The playground, once built, will be different than a typical playground in that it will be universally accessible allowing children of all abilities to fully enjoy the park and its equipment. The goal for Sacha’s Park is to create a playground that is inclusive and where the equipment works for everyone, including children with disabilities. A playground where EVERYONE can play.
The Chenier family have purchased property for the park to be built on and are working with the Township of Champlain, who are supportive of the project, to secure funding for the equipment, which will cost several hundred thousand dollars.
